In England, dem Land legendärer und sagenumwobener Könige wie Artus, Penda, Offa oder Alfred, erscheint ein neuer Thronanwärter auf der Bildfläche: Heathen Kings! Bereits letztes Jahr in Suffolk gegründet, ist es nun soweit, dass die vier heidnischen Könige, Andrew Clarke (Vocals und Gitarre), Oscar Charlton (Gitarre), Alex Body (Bass) und Joel Kurta (Drums), uns ihre erste Single In The Hall of The Kings präsentieren.

Der Name der Band geht auf die Bezeichnung der uralten Herrscher über Mittelerde zurück und auch die Single bezieht sich auf das Tolkien-Universum. So behandelt In The Hall of The Kings die Schlacht um Helms Klamm, die das Überleben der Rohirrim sicherte, und gewährt einen Einblick in die Gedanken Theodens, des Königs von Rohan. Ohne auf die Musik eingehen zu müssen, ist also schon festzuhalten, dass uns ein episches Abenteuer bevorsteht.

Nach einem episch-atmosphärischen Intro mit mystischem Chorgesang, von dem ich im Lied gerne mehr gehört hätte, treiben das stampfende Gitarrenspiel sowie die hämmernde Rhythmussektion die Nummer ordentlich voran. Untermauert wird dies durch die kräftigen Vocals von Clarke, welche mich an eine etwas höhere Version von Jake Rogers (Visigoth) erinnern. Auch sonst überzeugt der Gesang ganz klar, da er nicht nur die Melodie, sondern auch die Emotionen gut überträgt. Besonders deutlich wird dies im hymnischen Chorus, der die Fäuste magnetisch anzieht. Hier gelingt es, einen wirklich optimistischen Klang zu kreieren, der, angesichts der Lyrics im Chorus, die dargestellte Szenerie des verzweifelten Ausbrechens Theodens und seiner Reiter aus den eigenen belagerten Mauern in die feindlichen Massen, hervorragend widerspiegelt.

Fazit: Mit ihrer ersten Single schaffen es Heathen Kings, durchaus zu überzeugen. Bezüglich der Performance sticht besonders der Gesang hervor, während der Rest in nicht mal vier Minuten kaum die Chance hat, sein Können völlig unter Beweis zu stellen. Umso mehr bin ich auf zukünftige Releases gespannt, da man auf In The Hall of The Kings sehr gute Ansätze zeigt. Die Nummer macht wirklich Spaß und mit der Kombination aus klassischem Heavy Metal und epischen Akzenten sollte man bei Fans von Bands wie Visigoth oder Grand Magus definitiv Anklang finden. Also haltet die Augen auf und hört unbedingt mal rein! Ein Tolkien-Konzeptalbum wäre doch schließlich was!

In England, the land of legendary and fabled kings such as Arthur, Penda, Offa or Alfred, a new pretender to the throne has appeared on the scene: Heathen Kings! Formed back last year in Suffolk, the four Heathen Kings, Andrew Clarke (vocals and guitar), Oscar Charlton (guitar), Alex Body (bass) and Joel Kurta (drums), are now ready to present to their first single, In The Hall Of The Kings.

The name of the band can be traced back to the ancient rulers over Middle Earth and also the single deals deals with the Tolkien universe. In The Hall of The Kings covers the Battle of Helm’s Deep, which ensured the survival of the Rohirrim, and provides an insight into the thoughts of Theoden, King of Rohan. Thus, without talking about the music, it can already be stated that we are in for an epic adventure.

After an epic atmospheric intro with mystical choirs, which I would have liked to hear more of in the song, the stomping guitar playing and the hammering rhythm section drive the song forward strongly. This is underpinned by Clarke’s powerful vocals, which remind me of a somewhat higher version of Jake Rogers (Visigoth). But also otherwise the vocal performance is quite convincing, as they not only convey melody but also emotions very well. This becomes especially clear in the hymn-like chorus, which attracts the fists tot the sky like a magnet. Here one succeeds in creating a truly optimistic sound which, given the lyrics in the chorus, excellently reflects the depicted scene of Theoden and his horsemen desperately charging out of their own besieged walls into the enemy masses.

Conclusion: Heathen Kings deliver. Regarding the performance, especially the vocals stand out, while the rest hardly has a chance to prove their skills in less than four minutes. All the more I am looking forward to future releases, as the band shows very good approaches on In The Hall of The Kings. The track is really fun and with the combination of classic Heavy Metal and epic elements they should definitely find favour with fans of bands like Visigoth or Grand Magus. So keep your eyes open and definitely give it a listen! After all, a Tolkien concept album would be something truly epic!
