Es gibt auch in diesen turbulenten Zeiten ein paar Dinge, auf die man sich stets verlassen kann. Dazu zählt zweifellos der Musikgeschmack meines geschätzten Co-Chefredakteurs Aidan. Vor gut drei Wochen bewertete er die erste Single der englischen Newcomer Heathen Kings, “In the Hall of the Kings”, in seinem ausführlichen Review immerhin mit 78%.
Das erste Lebenszeichen des Quartetts aus Suffolk darf man demzufolge als äußerst vielversprechend bezeichnen. Umso erfreulicher, dass uns nun bereits die zweite Single aus dem hoffentlich bald anstehenden Debütalbum vorliegt. “A Song für Denethor” kann in qualitativer Hinsicht mühelos mit dem guten Vorgänger mithalten. Wer mir diese typisch britischen, hochmelodischen Gitarrenmelodien serviert, ist ohnehin mein Freund. Bei den tollen, spritzigen Leads hat man selbstverständlich unweigerlich Iron Maiden im Hinterkopf, aber man denkt auch an jüngere Truppen von der Insel, zum Beispiel die großartigen Seven Sisters aus London. Auch der Gesang weiß, wie bei den meisten Nachwuchsbriten, zu überzeugen: Andy Clarke, der neben Oscar Charlton überdies am Sechssaiter aktiv ist, verfügt über eine variable Stimme, der man einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert attestieren darf. Da er auch in höheren Lagen souverän agiert, sind die Vocals ein dicker Pluspunkt. “A Song für Denethor” besticht aber allen voran mit einem einprägsamen Chorus, der den Hörer gleicht packt. Da er auch die Erhabenheit ausstrahlt, die zu Tolkien passt und die wir uns auf diesem Blog stets wünschen, dürften die Heathen Kings den Großteil unserer Leserschaft überzeugen.
Fazit: NWOTHM-Bands müssen sich manchmal den Vorwurf gefallen lassen, keine Hits komponieren zu können. Das ist natürlich so pauschal nicht korrekt, aber auch nicht gänzlich aus der Luft gegriffen. Die Heathen Kings beweisen jedoch bereits zum zweiten Mal, dass sie in puncto Songwriting bereits ein hohes Niveau erreichen. Meiner Meinung nach ist “A Song für Denethor” noch etwas eingängiger als “In the Hall of the Kings” – und daher eine nahezu perfekte Single, die Heavy Metal- und Epic Metal-Fans gleichermaßen abholt.

Even in these turbulent times, there are a few things you can always count on. Among them is undoubtedly the musical taste of my esteemed co-editor-in-chief Aidan. Three weeks ago he rated the first single of the English newcomers Heathen Kings, “In the Hall of the Kings”, with 78% in his detailed review.
The first sign of life of the quartet from Suffolk can therefore be called extremely promising. All the more pleasing that we now already have the second single from the hopefully soon forthcoming debut album. “A Song for Denethor” can easily keep up with the good predecessor in terms of quality. Whoever serves me these typically British, highly melodic guitar tunes is my friend anyway. With the great, sparkling leads, one inevitably has Iron Maiden in mind, of course, but one also thinks of younger troops from the island, for example the great Seven Sisters from London. Also the vocals are convincing, as with most of the newcomers from Great Britain: Andy Clarke, who is also active on the six-string alongside Oscar Charlton, has a variable voice, which one can attest a high recognition value. Since he also acts confidently in higher registers, the vocals are a big plus. “A Song for Denethor” impresses above all with a catchy chorus, which grabs the listener immediately. Since it also radiates the grandeur that fits Tolkien and that we always wish for on this blog, the Heathen Kings should convince the majority of our readership.
Conclusion: NWOTHM bands sometimes have to put up with the reproach of not being able to compose hits. Of course, this is not correct as a general rule, but it is also not completely out of the air. However, the Heathen Kings already prove for the second time that they already reach a high level in terms of songwriting. In my opinion, “A Song for Denethor” is even a bit catchier than “In the Hall of the Kings” – and therefore an almost perfect single that will appeal to Heavy Metal and Epic Metal fans alike.
