Am Ende des Jahres ist es immer wieder schön, mit den Bands zu plaudern, die einen im Laufe der zurückliegenden Monate begleitet haben. Eine von diesen Bands ist Don’t Drop The Sword. Da die Jungs aus Erding in anderthalb Wochen erstmals ein eigenes Eintagesfestival in ihrer Heimat auf die Beine stellen werden, gab es besonders viel Gesprächsbedarf. Wir bedanken uns bei Sänger Anti und Gitarrist Max für ihre Zeit.
André: Grüßt euch, wie geht’s es euch auf der Zielgeraden des laufenden Jahres?
Anti: Gut, würd‘ ich sagen. Wir sind fleißig wie meistens – zum einen bereiten wir uns natürlich auf die Night Of The Sword-Bearers vor, die wir dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal organisieren, zum anderen sind wir brav am Einstudieren der Songs für unser nächstes Album.
André: Am 26.11. steht in Erding die von dir gerade bereits angesprochene Night Of The Sword-Bearers an. Erzählt unseren Lesern doch einmal, was es mit diesem wunderbaren Event auf sich hat.
Anti: Die Night Of The Sword-Bearers ist unser Versuch, unserer Heimatszene, die uns all die Jahre begleitet und unterstützt hat, etwas zurückzugeben. Wir wollen – speziell nach den Coronajahren – die Szene wiederbeleben, so gut wir können und stellen daher ein kleines Event auf die Beine. Wir haben dabei zwar wie durch ein Wunder den Headlinerslot ergattert (*hust*), wollen aber natürlich nicht nur uns selber auf die Bühne stellen. Wir versuchen künftig, jedes Jahr eine Undergroundband zu unterstützen, indem wir ihr über die Night Of The Sword-Bearers die Möglichkeit geben, sich einem etwas größeren Publikum zu präsentieren.
Max: Um die Sache rund zu machen, wollen wir außerdem immer eine Band einladen, die wir auf unserem Weg kennengelernt haben oder die wir einfach geil finden und uns deswegen die Bühne mit ihr teilen möchten. Für die Premiere dieses Events haben wir uns Pile of Ashes geschnappt, die schon seit längerem den Erdinger Underground unsicher machen und sich mit uns unseren neuen Rhythmusgitarristen Korbi teilen. Als zweite Band konnten wir Reinforcer gewinnen, die wir auf der von euch organisierten Epic Metal Night im Helvete Club kennenlernen durften und die extra aus Paderborn anreisen!
André: Dürfen die Fans mit einer besonders langen Don’t Drop The Sword-Setlist rechnen?
Anti: Ja freilich, wir haben schon lang darauf gespechtet, mal wieder ein volles Set zu spielen! Mit einer Stunde ist es nicht getan, das lasst euch gesagt sein.[lacht] Neben einigen Klassikern, die im Sonic ihre Premiere gefeiert haben, werden wir angemessenerweise auch ein paar unserer neuesten Songs hier zum ersten Mal spielen.
André: Das ist eine gute Überleitung: Im Juni erschien eure jüngste EP Prelude to the Age of Heroes. Wie ist eigentlich das Feedback ausgefallen?
Anti: Das fiel durchweg positiv aus, was uns natürlich extrem freut! Ähnlich wie wir sind alle Reviewer gespannt auf die neue Scheibe und sahen die Prelude genau als das, was sie sein sollte: Ein „Mongtratzerl“, wie wir hier in Bayern sagen. (Anm. des Übersetzers: „Magentratzerl, das“: Ein kleiner Happen, der mehr Appetit auf das Hauptgericht machen soll)
André: Auf dem Epic Metal Blog lernt man was, das Wort muss ich mir merken und irgendwie in den halbwegs aktiven Wortschatz befördern… Wie eingangs bereits gesagt, neigt sich 2022 dem Ende entgegen. Welche Alben, die im laufenden Jahr veröffentlicht worden sind, haben euch besonders begeistern können?
Anti: Mich haben dieses Jahr vor allem die neuen Platten von Kreator und Avantasia begeistert, aber überraschend ist vor allem Letzteres weniger. Was mich tatsächlich ungewöhnlicherweise voll abgeholt hat, war die Debütplatte einer Black-Metal-Kombo namens Lightlorn, nämlich These Nameless Worlds, speziell die Nummer „Through the Cold Black Yonder“.
Max: Ganz im Sinne eures Blogs fallen mir natürlich kleinere Bands ein, wie zum Beispiel unsere schwedischen Kumpels von Vanquisher, die dieses Jahr ihr Debütalbum veröffentlicht haben. Die vom Epic Metal Blog äußerst positiv rezensierte EP Ridge & Furrow von Dark Forest war auch ein echt toller Tipp. Meine bekannteren Favoriten sind Ghosts Impera und die neue Bloodbath-Platte.
André: Und wie hat euch das letzte Blind Guardian-Album gefallen?
Anti: Es ist für mich eine Scheibe, bei der Blind Guardian wieder ein Stück weit zu ihren Wurzeln zurückkommen, ohne ihre musikalische Entwicklung der letzten Jahre zu revidieren. Im Vergleich zu früheren Werken wird aber meiner Meinung nach weniger Wert auf Eingängigkeit gelegt, sondern eher wieder ein komplexer, abwechslungsreicher Sound geboten, der bei jedem Mal Anhören den Zugang erleichtert. Für mich heißt das, ähnlich wie bei der Night at the Opera oder der Red Mirror, dass ich mich länger damit beschäftigen und Stück für Stück reinfinden werde.
André: Letzte Frage: Was waren eure persönlichen Highlights 2022? Welche Momente als Band habt ihr ganz besonders genossen?
Anti: [lacht] Das klingt schon langsam, als würden wir nur Werbung füreinander machen, aber mir fällt ohne hier schmeicheln zu wollen als Erstes die schon erwähnte Epic Metal Night ein. Wir haben ja schon mal drüber gesprochen – es ging für uns allein schon bei der Anreise so viel schief, dass man sich lachend ins eigene Schwert hätte stürzen können, aber das gesamte Event, die Bands, der Sound, die Menschen… all das war der Hammer. Für uns war es ein saugeiles Erlebnis, das wir genauso wieder mitmachen würden, mit geschrottetem Auto, geschlossenem Hotel, Wasserschaden und allem!
Max: Dann gab es da das Open Park Festival in Pfaffenhofen, das dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal stattfand und natürlich das Metal im Woid, bei dem wir, winterlichen Temperaturen zum Trotz, die Stimmung im Zelt angeheizt haben! Jetzt bleibt uns dieses Jahr „nur“ noch, unsere erste Night Of The Sword-Bearers angemessen geil in (die) Szene zu setzen und bei all der Arbeit, die wir uns da so machen, freuen wir uns natürlich wie blöd darauf. [lacht]
André: Und für diese Night Of The Sword-Bearers wünschen wir euch selbstverständlich alles Gute. Da uns die Epic Metal Night, wie schon häufig geschrieben, ebenfalls sehr gut gefallen hat, sollten wir den Ansgar doch demnächst mal davon überzeugen, das Ganze zu wiederholen – von mir aus mit denselben Bands, plus den ursprünglich auch gebuchten Wheel, die ja krankheitsbedingt passen mussten. At the end of the year, it’s always nice to chat with the bands that have accompanied you over the past months. One of these bands is Don’t Drop The Sword. Since the guys from Erding will be putting on their own one-day festival in their home town for the first time in a week and a half, there was a lot to talk about. We thank singer Anti and guitarist Max for their time.
André: Hi to you, how are you doing on the home stretch of the current year?
Anti: Good, I’d say. We’re busy as usual – on the one hand we’re preparing for the Night Of The Sword-Bearers, which we’re organising for the first time this year, and on the other hand we’re busy rehearsing the songs for our next album.
André: On 26/11 the mentioned Night Of The Sword-Bearers will take place in Erding. Please tell our readers what this wonderful event is all about.
Anti: The Night Of The Sword-Bearers is our attempt to give something back to our home scene, which has accompanied and supported us all these years. We want – especially after the Corona years – to revive the scene as best we can and therefore put on a small event. We miraculously got the headliner slot (cough), but of course we don’t just want to put ourselves on stage. In the future, we will try to support an underground band every year by giving them the opportunity to present themselves to a somewhat larger audience through the Night Of The Sword-Bearers.
Max: To round things off, we also always want to invite a band that we have met along the way or that we just think is cool and therefore want to share the stage with them. For the premiere of this event we got Pile of Ashes, who have been making the Erdinger Underground unsafe for quite a while now and share our new rhythm guitarist Korbi with us. The second band is Reinforcer, who we had the pleasure of meeting at the Epic Metal Night you organised at the Helvete Club and who will come all the way from Paderborn!
André: Can the fans expect a particularly long Don’t Drop The Sword setlist?
Anti: Yes of course, we have been waiting for a long time to play a full set again! One hour is not enough, let me tell you [laughs] Besides some classics that premiered at Sonic, we will also play a few of our newest songs here for the first time.
André: That’s a good transition: In June your latest EP Prelude to the Age of Heroes was released. How has the feedback been?
Anti: It was positive throughout, which of course makes us extremely happy! Like us, all the reviewers are excited about the new record and saw Prelude as exactly what it should be: a “Mongtratzerl”, as we say here in Bavaria. (Translator’s note: “Magentratzerl, das”: A small morsel that is supposed to whet the appetite for the main course).
André: You learn something on the Epic Metal Blog, I have to remember that word and somehow get it into my semi-active vocabulary… As I said at the beginning, 2022 is coming to an end. Which albums released this year have particularly impressed you?
Anti: This year, I was particularly excited by the new records by Kreator and Avantasia, but the latter in particular is less surprising. What really got me, unusually, was the debut record of a black metal combo called Lightlorn, which is called These Nameless Worlds, especially the number “Through the Cold Black Yonder”.
Max: In the spirit of your blog, smaller bands naturally come to mind, such as our Swedish pals Vanquisher, who released their debut album this year. Dark Forest‘s EP Ridge & Furrow, which was reviewed very positively by the Epic Metal Blog, was also a really great tip. My better known favourites are Ghost‘s Impera and the new Bloodbath record.
André: And how did you like the last Blind Guardian album?
Anti: For me it’s a record where Blind Guardian come back to their roots a bit without revising their musical development of the last years. Compared to earlier works, however, in my opinion less emphasis is placed on catchiness, but rather a complex, varied sound is offered again, which makes it easier to access each time you listen to it. For me, this means, similar to Night at the Opera or Red Mirror, that I will spend more time with it and find my way in bit by bit.
André: Last question: What were your personal highlights in 2022? What moments as a band did you particularly enjoy?
Anti: [laughs] This is starting to sound like we’re just advertising for each other, but without wanting to flatter, the first thing that comes to mind is the Epic Metal Night I mentioned earlier. We’ve talked about it before – so many things went wrong for us just getting there that you could have fallen on your sword laughing, but the whole event, the bands, the sound, the people… all that was awesome. For us it was a great experience and we would do it again, with a wrecked car, closed hotel, water damage and everything!
Max: Then there was the Open Park Festival in Pfaffenhofen, which took place for the first time this year, and of course the Metal im Woid, where we heated up the atmosphere in the tent, despite the wintry temperatures! Now the “only” thing left for us to do this year is to put our first Night Of The Sword-Bearers into (the) scene in an appropriately cool way, and with all the work we’re doing, we’re of course looking forward to it like stupid. [laughs]
André: And of course we wish you all the best for this Night Of The Sword-Bearers. Since we also liked the Epic Metal Night very much, we should convince Ansgar to repeat the whole thing soon – with the same bands if you like, plus Wheel, who had to cancel due to illness. Give our best regards to the other guys!
