In less than a month Biwo will be on stage at the Turock Fest in Bochum. Reason enough to take a look at our title heroes again – fittingly, there is also interesting news, a new shirt design with a band mascot that underlines the guys’ connection to the Ruhr area.

André: Hi Sven, there is a new shirt from you. Please tell our readers something about this great design.

Sven: Hi André, the shirt is still in production. We expect it to be in our warehouse by mid-October. But the pre-sale has already started. The story behind it is somehow fate. Rainer Kalwitz (artwork for Firewind and Metal Church, among others) had some talks with our neighbouring band. They were so nice and introduced him to us. We quickly got talking and had a common denominator because of the Manowar and Iron Maiden flag and the Manilla Road poster in our room. I gave him one of our CDs and only afterwards found out who I was talking to. Since that day, we know each other and try to get to a concert together here and there. A guy like him, from the Pott, with these skills, was the perfect man for us. I think, since we are probably the last metal band in Castrop-Rauxel that plays heavy metal, he likes us a lot.

André: Yes, you are rather a metalcore stronghold, keyword Electric Callboy…

Sven: In the end, you were the one who gave us the tip to create a new shirt design, not everyone likes colourful. But the first designs by Justus and me were just too clumsy. After an hour-long phone call with Hanno, we came up with the ideas and the right headline. Don’t waste your time, otherwise you’ll end up just like the guy in the front of the motif.

André: Does the gentleman already have a name?

Sven: Is it Gruben-Eddie, is it Gruben-Reaper or simply “Kumpel”, as we say here in the Pott. (In the Ruhr area, the workers in the mines were called “Kumpel”. In Germany, the term is also used for a good friend.; note André). We don’t know yet, creative suggestions are welcome. [Or the Grim Reaper haunting the still winless VfL Bochum?, note André]. If coal mining and steel production were still active, we would have taken a living skull. But everything is dying out here, the coal is already completely gone and how long steel production will continue here is written in the stars. Everything the region stood for is slowly going down the drain here. We want to remind you of that time, also of the mentality, in the time when you still had a “Kumpel”.

André: With your intro before your shows, you also remind us of the history of the Ruhr area…

Sven: The roar of the machines, the sounds of the heavy equipment, it just feels like home. It’s a great introduction to the show and something unique. I’m also a big fan of film music, Manowar with Ben Hur, Riot City with the Terminator etc., but we’ve created something here that fits us exactly! Down-to-earth, grounded, real!

André: Will the Ruhr area also play a role in your lyrics in the future?

Sven: The debut was very personal and reflects my innermost thoughts. Now it’s time to work through new things and tell the world about them. We can be curious.

In knapp einen Monat stehen Biwo beim Turock Fest in Bochum auf der Bühne. Grund genug, mal wieder bei unseren Titelhelden vorbeizuschauen – passenderweise gibt es auch interessante News, ein neues Shirt-Design mit einem Bandmaskottchen, das die Verbundenheit der Jungs zum Ruhrgebiet unterstreicht.

André: Hi Sven, es gibt ein neues Shirt von euch. Erzähle unseren Lesern doch bitte mal etwas zu diesem tollen Design.

Sven: Moin André, das Shirt ist noch in der Produktion. Wir gehen davon aus, dass es Mitte Oktober in unserem Lager ist. Der Vorverkauf hat aber bereits begonnen. Die Geschichte dahinter ist irgendwie Schicksal. Rainer Kalwitz (Artwork u.a. für Firewind und Metal Church) hatte einige Gespräche bei unserer Nachbarband. Sie waren so nett und stellten ihn uns vor. Wir kamen schnell ins Gespräch und hatten aufgrund der Manowar– und Iron Maiden-Flagge und des Manilla Road-Posters in unserem Raum schnell einen gemeinsamen Nenner. Ich gab ihm eine CD von uns mit und habe erst danach herausgefunden, mit wem ich da überhaupt gesprochen hatte. Seit dem Tag kennt man sich und man versucht hier und da gemeinsam auf ein Konzert zu kommen. Ein Typ wie er, aus dem Pott, mit diesen Fähigkeiten, war der perfekte Mann für uns. Ich glaube, da wir wohl die letzte Metal-Band in Castrop-Rauxel sind, die Heavy Metal spielt, kann er uns gut leiden.

André: Ja, ihr seid ja eher eine Metalcore-Hochburg, Stichwort Electric Callboy…

Sven: Du warst schlussendlich derjenige, der uns den Tipp gegeben hatte, ein neues Shirt-Design zu gestalten, es mag ja nicht jeder bunt. Die ersten Entwürfe von Justus und mir waren aber einfach zu plump. Nach einem stundenlangen Telefonat mit Hanno kamen uns dann die Ideen und die passende Überschrift. Verschwende nicht deine Zeit, sonst endest du genauso wie der Typ vorne auf dem Motiv.

André: Hat der Herr den schon einen Namen?

Sven: Ist es der Gruben-Eddie, ist es der Gruben-Reaper oder einfach der “Kumpel” (so wie wir es hier im Pott sagen)? Wir wissen es noch nicht, kreative Vorschläge sind gerne willkommen). [Oder der Sensenmann, der den immer noch sieglosen VfL Bochum heimsucht?, Anm. AK] Wäre der Kohlenbau und die Stahlproduktion noch aktiv, hätten wir einen lebendigen Schädel genommen. Aber hier stirbt alles aus, die Kohle ist schon ganz weg und wie lange die Stahlproduktion hier noch läuft, steht in den Sternen. Alles, wofür die Region stand, geht hier langsam den Bach runter. Wir wollen an diese Zeit erinnern, auch an die Mentalität, in der Zeit, als man noch einen “Kumpel” hatte.

André: Mit eurem Intro erinnert ihr vor euren Shows ja auch an die Geschichte des Ruhrgebietes…

Sven: Das Dröhnen der Maschinen, die Geräusche des schweren Gerätes, es fühlt sich einfach nach Heimat an. Es ist ein toller Einstieg in die Show und etwas Einmaliges. Ich bin auch ein großer Fan von Filmmusik, Manowar mit Ben Hur, Riot City mit dem Terminator etc., aber wir haben hier etwas geschaffen, das genau zu uns passt! Bodenständig, geerdet, echt!

André: Wird das Ruhrgebiet künftig auch in euren Texten eine Rolle spielen?

Sven: Das Debüt war sehr persönlich und spiegelt meine innersten Gedanken wider. Es gilt jetzt, neue Dinge aufzuarbeiten und der Welt davon zu erzählen. Wir dürfen gespannt sein.
