(1) André: Hi Mike, wie geht es dir? Bist du gut in das neue Jahr gestartet? Und welche „guten Vorsätze“ hast du?
Mike: Hallo André! Ich bin gut ins neue Jahr gekommen, ich hoffe du auch. Vorsätze habe ich tatsächlich keine, nur einen Wunsch, dass die Menschen sich etwas mehr mit Respekt und Achtung gegenübertreten, und mit weniger Vorurteilen.
(2) André: Wie blickst du auf das Jahr 2023 zurück?
Mike: Ich blicke positiv auf das letzte Jahr zurück. Man muss vorweg sagen, dass ich ein recht optimistischer Mensch bin, auch wenn man das vielleicht nicht denken mag, wenn man sich unsere Musik so anhört. Für mich persönlich ist mein Optimismus der Treibstoff, um Aufgaben anzugehen. Aber außer, dass ich privat viel um die Ohren hatte, war die EP eine aufregende Reise für mich. Ich hatte am Anfang des Jahres gerade einmal ein paar Demo-Songs für mich aufgenommen und dachte mir nichts dabei. Erst als ich Gonzalo Civita von HelėH/Tribal anschrieb, ob er zu “RIP (Landscape of Sorrow)” singen wollte und er zusagte, wurde das Ganze plötzlich ganz groß für mich. Gonzalo hatte direkt zugesagt, sogar bevor er wusste, dass es ein Song für meinen Bruder werden sollte. Das hat mir sehr viel bedeutet und allein dieser eine Song hat mich schon überglücklich gemacht. Aber da die Zusammenarbeit so viel Spaß gemacht hat, haben wir uns dazu entschlossen, eine EP aufzunehmen. Henrik Schaller, welcher bereits für zwei meiner Demo-Songs Solos gespielt hatte, stimmte auch sofort den Solos für “LSD Butterfly” und “Under the Pale Moonlight” zu. Und das Fetzner Death Records & Schattenpfade Support Circle es möglich gemacht haben, dass es die EP jetzt als CD gibt, ist unglaublich! Wenn man mir das alles vor einem Jahr erzählt hätte, hätte ich vermutlich lauthals losgelacht.
(3) André: Arbeitest du bereits an neuen Songs?
Mike: Nachdem ich Gonzalo, Henrik, Matias und meine Tochter Shannon, die die Texte schreibt, gefragt hatte, ob sie Lust hätten, weiter zusammen Musik zu machen und das Feedback sehr positiv war, haben wir uns dazu entschlossen, weiter Musik zu machen. Es wird voraussichtlich 2024 das erste Tales of Mike-Album geben. Mit den Songs kommen wir gut voran und ich wage zu behaupten, dass es episch wird. Ich kann mir Tales of Mike auch nur in dieser Besetzung vorstellen, weil ich es auch einfach mag, wenn Dinge konstant sind. Und da sich inzwischen auch wirklich gute Freundschaften entwickelt haben, war es der logischste Schritt, den wir hätten machen können.
(4) André: Können wir Tales of Mike in der Zukunft auch live hören?
Mike: Darüber habe ich mir nie wirklich Gedanken gemacht. In erster Linie ist Tales of Mike ein Studioprojekt für mich. Jeder Beteiligte hat auch seine eigenen Bands und Projekte, was man auch beachten muss. Aber man weiß nie, was die Zukunft bringt. Schließlich wurde aus einem Song auch eine EP.
(5) André: Welche Releases aus dem Jahr 2023 fandest du besonders stark?
Mike: Ich muss ehrlich gestehen, dass ich am meisten Tales of Mike-Demo-Songs gehört habe. Ich habe mir angewöhnt, die Songs in verschiedenen Stimmungen und bei verschiendenen Aktivitäten zu hören. So war es bei der EP, und auch jetzt bei den neuen Songs des Albums. Es gab 2023 viele starke Alben. Meine Top 5-Alben sind aber die von Kaunis Kuolematon, Voidhaven, Front Row Warriors, Death of Giants und Winterhorde geworden.

(1) André: Hi Mike, how are you? Have you had a good start to the new year? And what “good resolutions” do you have?
Mike: Hello André! I’ve had a good start to the new year, I hope you have too. I don’t really have any resolutions, just a wish that people would treat each other with a little more respect and consideration and with fewer prejudices.
(2) André: How do you look back on 2023?
Mike: I look back positively on the past year. It has to be said up front that I’m a pretty optimistic person, even if you might not think so when you listen to our music. For me personally, my optimism is the fuel I need to tackle tasks. But apart from having a lot on my plate, the EP has been an exciting journey for me. I had only recorded a few demo songs for myself at the beginning of the year and thought nothing of it. It wasn’t until I wrote to Gonzalo Civita from HelėH/Tribal asking if he wanted to sing on “RIP (Landscape of Sorrow)” and he said yes, that the whole thing suddenly became really big for me. Gonzalo said yes straight away, even before he knew that it was going to be a song for my brother. That meant a lot to me and that one song alone made me over the moon. But because the collaboration was so much fun, we decided to record an EP. Henrik Schaller, who had already played solos for two of my demo songs, immediately agreed to do the solos for “LSD Butterfly” and “Under the Pale Moonlight”. And the fact that Fetzner Death Records & Schattenpfade Support Circle have made it possible for the EP to be released on CD is incredible! If I had been told all this a year ago, I would probably have laughed out loud.
(3) André: Are you already working on new songs?
Mike: After I asked Gonzalo, Henrik, Matias and my daughter Shannon, who writes the lyrics, if they would like to continue making music together and the feedback was very positive, we decided to continue making music. The first Tales of Mike album is expected to be released in 2024. We are making good progress with the songs and I dare say it will be epic. I can only imagine Tales of Mike with this line-up because I just like things to be constant. And as really good friendships have developed in the meantime, it was the most logical step we could have taken.
(4) André: Can we also see Tales of Mike live in the future?
Mike: I’ve never really thought about that. First and foremost, Tales of Mike is a studio project for me. Everyone involved also has their own bands and projects, which you also have to take into account. But you never know what the future holds. After all, one song also became an EP.
(5) André: Which releases from 2023 did you find particularly strong?
Mike: I honestly have to admit that I’ve listened to the most Tales of Mike demo songs. I’ve got into the habit of listening to the songs in different moods and during different activities. That was the case with the EP, and also now with the new songs on the album. There were many strong albums in 2023. But my top 5 albums have become those by Kaunis Kuolematon, Voidhaven, Front Row Warriors, Death of Giants and Winterhorde.
